What causes Homelessness?

There are estimated to be about 2000 people who are homeless in the Worcester area. About 30% of them are families without homes, the rest are sometimes described as “unaccompanied adults”.

Most people without homes are back on their feet after less than two months. People who move into and out of housing over many years are sometimes described as "chronically homeless". These individuals, a large majority of which are men, are often employed, or are receiving disability benefits. An increasing number of people chronically fighting homelessness have been among youth, and the elderly.

While addictions and mental and physical disabilities certainly make it hard to climb out of homelessness, we all know people with homes who are living with mental illness or addictions.

The primary cause of homelessness is poverty and isolation. To end homelessness, we need to end the poverty in our cities and in our nation. To end homelessness, we need to end our isolation from each other. Worcester Fellowship is dedicated to ending isolation for those living in poverty, both those presently with and without homes.
